Classroom Guidance:

The Virginia Standards for School Counseling outline the curriculum covered during classroom guidance. The counselor presents approximately eight lessons a year to each classroom on topics in three general domains: academic, career, and personal/social.

Small-Group Counseling:

Small group sessions will be offered throughout the year to support children going through similar challenges. Groups meet once a week for approximately six to eight weeks. Parents will receive notification of groups and will have the opportunity to register students for the group. Types of groups will be determined by the needs of the student population. Groups may include but not be limited to the following:

  • Changing Families
  • Social Skills
  • Anger Management
  • Girls' Group

Individual Counseling:

Individual guidance is considered brief therapy or support. Students may request to see a counselor or parents and teachers may refer a student. If a student is in need of more extensive counseling for a longer duration, parents will be notified of the counselors' recommendation along with a list of available professional resources in the area.

Consultation:

Counselors are available to consult with teachers, parents, administrators, and other professionals to help ensure each child has a safe and positive learning environment. Counselors can be reached by phone, fax, letter, or e-mail. Counselors are not available to testify in child custody battles.
