    Preschool Programs

    Powhatan County Public Schools is pleased to offer a Pre-Kindergarten program for four-year-old children. The goal of the program is to provide a healthy learning environment for children who may experience factors that place them at risk for poor school performance. The selection of students will be based on student & family needs according to program guidelines for the Virginia Preschool Initiative. Enrollment priority will be given to children with the greatest number of factors that may impact their learning. Factors considered include but are not limited to:

    · Income level of the parent/legal guardian
    · Education level of the parents
    · Child characteristics
    · Family stress
    · English as a second language

    Two classes will be located at Pocahontas Elementary School. The classes will operate on the same calendar and school schedule as the elementary schools. Each class will be limited to 18 students. Children will be transported from their home school zones. *Location is subject to change.

    This is not a first-come, first-served program. To be eligible for the program, children must be legal residents of Powhatan County and be four years of age by September 30, 2020. Applications must be filled out completely. Proof of residency and financial information will be requested once applications are reviewed. Families will be required to attend meetings and field trips with their child in this program.

    For additional information please contact the Powhatan County Administration Office at 804-598-5700.

    Applications are available at all elementary schools: Flat Rock, Pocahontas, Powhatan and the School Administration Offices at 4920 Anderson Hwy, or online at www.powhatan.k12.va.us Applications should be returned to any elementary school or the School Administration Offices. Summer Reading Program 2020

    Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

    Powhatan County Public Schools has partnered with the Powhatan County Public Library and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office to offer Imagine Your Story, a Summer Learning Challenge. This program provides a variety of activities for PK-5th grade readers while maintaining safety and social distancing. Participants may register by visiting www.powhatanlibrary.net and clicking the “Summer Learning Registration” button. Summer Learning runs through August 31st and participants can earn chances to win a summer prize raffle all summer long.

    Children can complete activities on the Summer Learning Challenge choice boards throughout the summer. A new choice board is available every month!  Monthly Summer Learning Challenge Kits for children ages 2-12 may be picked up from the library beginning June 15. Each kit contains a new book, materials and instructions for art and science projects, as well as additional enrichment activities. Summer Learning Challenge Kits help battle “summer slide” by encouraging children to find the joy of reading and provide opportunities for children to build their own library. Kits are made possible through the generosity of the Friends of the Powhatan Library, the Powhatan Extension Office and the Powhatan County Public Schools elementary Parent Teacher Organizations. Future kits will be available July 13 and August 3. Kits will also be distributed from both Feeding Powhatan and Powhatan Food Bank each month. Contactless pick up of Summer Learning Kits may be arranged by calling the library at 598-5670. All kits are available while supplies last.

    We hope you can join us for a summer filled with learning and fun!

    Happy reading!

    Mindfulness at Home

    The school counselors collaborated with Kirsten Lightner, one of the School Psychologists in the county, who created a lesson about mindfulness! Practicing mindfulness, gratitude, and building skills of resilience during these times of uncertainty can not only help our students but their parents and families as well. Check out the lesson below and the resources at the end for activities that can help your child practice!
